Oral pathology, also referred to as oral and maxillofacial pathology is a specialty, which involves the diagnosis and the study of the causes and effects of diseases that affect the oral health and maxillofacial health.
Oral surgeons usually offer oral pathology at their offices, because they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to aid patients in gaining back their oral health, leaving their overall health uncompromised.
Often times than not, there are four main oral diseases that are found with oral pathology.
- Herpes Simplex Virus
- If you’re suffering from herpes, you will have blisters or cold sores in the mouth. This is an infection, that may cause pain and discomfort to the mouth area. These sores are contagious, so it is important to keep on top of your symptoms. This is a virus that stays within the body, but is not always active.
- Black Hairy Tongue
- This condition is harmless, but is not one many don’t have treated. This condition is when the tongue grows papillae, which are cone shaped growths, and they don’t shed naturally. Usually, this condition is brought upon by poor oral hygiene, or even medications.
- Oral Cancer
- Oral cancer has the option to affect the mouth, tongue, lips and throat. This is one of the most serious oral issues you can deal with, and can be as severe as any other cancer. It is important to see your doctor and get these screenings to ensure your health stays optimal.
- Candidiasis
- This condition is caused by overgrowth of fungus in the mouth. Anyone with compromised immune systems have more of the chance to contract this condition. To rid the fungus, chemotherapy, steroids or antibiotics may be used.
Having this specific knowledge is extremely beneficial for patients because it allows a deeper dive into their oral health, which could eventually affect the health of the overall body and functioning of the body.
